Union de Concreteras S.A., known  as Unicon, emerged in Lima in 1996 from the merger of two companies, COPRESA and HORMEC, leaders in ready-mixed concrete in Peru.  The advantageous position of these companies situated Unicon at the head of raw material production for Peru’s construction industry.

With a workforce of 1,500, Unicon strives to exceed customer expectations when it comes to quality and service. The company’s corporate philosophy is to provide integrated solutions and advanced technology in the production of building materials. This commitment to excellence has solidified the ready-mixed concrete company as the leader in its industry.

Today, with 16 years of experience under its belt, Unicon pulls from its extensive knowledge, resources and technology to complete any project, while focusing on reducing its carbon footprint. According to the company, Unicon not only pays attention to its sales numbers, but also looks for new solutions to remain at the forefront of technological developments in ready-mixed concrete and related products.

National & International Liaisons

A skill that placed the company at the forefront of the industry is its ability to form partnerships with strong allies. In 1997, Unicon formed an alliance with Master Builders Technologies (MBT), a U.S company specializing in chemical additives for concrete mixes. MBT, headquartered in Ohio, that distributes its products to more than 170 countries. Unicon was able to establish its leadership in this type of concrete technology in Peru, thanks in part to this affiliation.

In the local business arena, Unicon partnered with Cementos Lima and built the Ancieta Bricks Plant, located in the El Augustino District and considered one of the most modern plants of its kind. The plant, with an estimated cost of $2.4 million, will produce bricks, blocks and pavers for the Koncreto family of products with a production estimated at 8 million units.

Unicon formed another valuable partnership in 1999 with PROPEX Concrete Systems, global leader in the development of polypropylene fibers, metallic fibers and geo-textiles.

These strategic alliances place Unicon as the leading producer and distributor of ready mixed concrete products and high quality services, in compliance with local operating laws. The company also has earned ISO 9001 and is currently working towards OHSAS 18001 and the ISO 1400 certifications. Its commitment to excellence has enabled Unicon to maintain and improve its quality control, while achieving recognition as the only concrete company that operates under Peru’s statutes.

Concrete Products

Unicon specializes in concrete pumping services and has a fleet of 90 concrete pumps, boom pumps, stationary truck-mounted pumps, tunnel pumps and mining pumps. Its Schwing and Putzmeister pumps, have capacities of 25 to 134 cubic meters per hour, and vertical ranges from 60 to 250 meters and 130 meters horizontally to up to 600 meters. One of the models, the Putzmeister pump model 2110, has a capacity of 550 vertical meters and 1,500 meters horizontal.

Unicon’s mining products include shotcrete or wet mix, a product that is transported through pipes or hoses, projected at high velocity onto a surface. This product has excellent adhesive and compacting qualities. Shotcrete is an ideal product for curved sections, tunnels, surface repairs, reinforcement and stabilization of structures and tanks.

For comprehensive road solutions, the company offers Duravía, a concrete pavement technology for roads and highways.

Concrete Project

Unicon put all its technology to work on the construction of the Westin Libertador Lima, the first luxury Westin hotel in South America. This hotel is the highest building built in Peru, with 30 floors, measuring 118 meters tall. The Westin Libertador, located in the financial district of San Isidro, Lima, has 311 rooms and a 7,900 square meter convention center with 2,000-person capacity.

Unicon supplied 43,000 cubic meters of concrete over a period of two years,. Concrete distribution was done using boom and trailer pumps, pumping up to 40 meters high. The hotel opened its doors in the spring of 2011.

Unicon is currently supplying concrete to one of the largest mining project in the region, Las Bambas, in Peru’s Cotabambas and Grau Provinces. This copper mine, owned by Xstrata, is expected to produce 400,000 tonnes a year of copper in concentrate, including a significant amount of gold, silver and molybdenum by-products. Las Bambas is located 12,000 feet above sea level in a challenging environment; the comprehensive project will require about 200,000 cubic meters of concrete.

Unicon plans on leaving its mark in the construction industry with solid projects such as the Westin hotel and Las Bambas Mine for years to come.
