HORACE MANN thumbHorace Mann Educators Corp. believes that while educators are working hard to lay the foundation upon which students will build their futures, someone should be looking out for their futures, too. “We compete with everyone, but don’t feel we compete with anyone,” CEO Marita Zuraitis says. “We are the largest multi-line insurance provider to public K-12 educators and take a solutions approach. We find the dollars to help them protect what they have today and secure a long-term financial future.”

After almost 30 years in business, Sebert Landscaping has become one of the leading landscape services providers in the Chicagoland area. Charleston Forge’s dedication to the rustic artistry of its custom handcrafted furniture is something consumers don’t see much anymore. The company is one of the country’s premier manufacturers of iron bakers racks, bar stools, dining tables, chairs and small iron furniture items, and its metal furniture is made in the mountains of North Carolina.

“The fact is, there are not a lot of others out there who are doing upper end metal products in the United States,” co-owner Rick Grant says. “Much of that went overseas, but we’ve been able to transform into a boutique manufacturer that still does products for furniture retailers’ showroom floors and also does a lot of custom work for designers. We can turn items around quickly, and we’re also involved in a lot of contract projects. Our ability to customize is what keeps us alive.”

Union de Concreteras S.A., known  as Unicon, emerged in Lima in 1996 from the merger of two companies, COPRESA and HORMEC, leaders in ready-mixed concrete in Peru.  The advantageous position of these companies situated Unicon at the head of raw material production for Peru’s construction industry.

Waking up to the sound of the alarm clock and going to the kitchen, half asleep, for the first cup of morning coffee is a routine in millions of homes. The most incredible thing is that we can describe in detail that first cup of coffee, but we seldom realize that the container that holds it is the result of the work of many people and of a whole industry that takes place behind it.

Sight and sound aren’t the only senses engaged in a movie theater. Yes, the big screen and even bigger sound are the draw, but the items engaging the moviegoer’s sense of taste and smell are just as key to the experience and play a major role in a theater’s success. Dennis Redmer, vice president of operations at MJR Digital Cinema, explains that even though the movie is what brings people through the doors, the concession stand plays a large part in keeping the doors open.

Although it didn’t appear so at the time, leaving Progress Industries – a tank manufacturer then located in Arthur, Ill. – has worked out all right for Gery Conlin, president and owner of Mid-State Tank Co. Inc. “In 1986, I had a disagreement with the managers, left the company and started Mid-State,” Conlin recounts. “As it turned out, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
