The management and staff of Premier Valley Bank believe strongly in building relationships with customers, shareholders and the communities it works in. “Relationship banking is the driving force behind everything we do,” says J. Mike McGowan, founding president and CEO of the Fresno, Calif.-based bank. “Our relationships are based on a mutual trust between banker and client, built over time.

It is no coincidence that the strongest leaders in business – those who run the largest, most successful corporations in the world – are talented at what they do because they’ve read up on the subject. They know who the gurus are, like John Maxwell, Stephen Covey and Ken Blanchard – voted the three most influential in 2010 – and will cite from their books or seminars. Cliff Bartow does. He is the president and CEO of Family Christian Stores (FCS), the leading Christian products and church supplies retail enterprise, with 290 stores in 36 states and more than 4,000 employees.

When TH Hilson Co. President Lori Hilson Cioromski started with her father’s company 25 years ago in chemical industry sales, she admits she was young and the only woman in her training session. “I had to prove myself and come back with reliable answers to be a resource for my customers,” Cioromski concedes. “I worked as hard, or harder, than anyone else.”

To thrive for three generations as a family owned and operated company, Monroe Motor Products has had to keep its ears to the ground and its eyes on the road. As each decade brings on new technologies and new trends, Michael Gordon, president and CEO, says the company’s ability to react quickly when necessary, but still maintain a long-term view has been key to Monroe’s 94 years of success. And at the end of the day, Gordon says, as a needs-based seller, all the company’s decisions boil down to one question: Is it good for the customer?

After serving for 20 years in the U.S. Navy – a tenure that included more than 11 years at sea aboard several destroyers, amphibious ships and an aircraft carrier – Frank Musorrafiti founded EPS Corp. (originally known as Engineering and Professional Services Inc.) in 1983. Since that time, the company has provided a range of professional services for the federal government, the military and civilian agencies around the world, focusing on fielding and training – EPS has trained more than 600,000 soldiers since its inception – and infrastructure work.

People from every income bracket have financial needs and goals, yet countless financial services companies only cater to a select few within their target demographics. World Financial Group (WFG) is one of the few companies of its kind in the industry dedicated to serving the financial needs of individuals and families from all walks of life, who in turn become part of the WFG team.

"The workplace at Van Horn, Metz is that of a family atmosphere," Chairman Morgan Smith says. "We are always looking for people with a good attitude and aptitude with a willingness to achieve results. Our training programs include product, safety and hazmat training.

CEO Jeff Swartz says The Islander Group has competition, but that doesnÕt mean there are any distributors like it in Hawaii. The general merchandise and gift distributor stands apart in the marketplace because of the breadth of products it carries. "We have competition in every one of our categories, but there isn't one company that competes in every category we're in," he says. "We think this is a real strength as it allow us access to multiple product categories with all of the major retailers in the state."
