Eating Recovery Center

From its headquarters in Denver, Eating Recovery Center has grown into a world leader in providing comprehensive treatment for anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, and other specified feeding and eating disorders. Led by Drs. Kenneth Weiner, Craig Johnson, Emmett Bishop, Philip Mehler and Ovidio Bermudez, the company provides extensive services for female and male children, adolescents and adults through inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient services.

“I have been treating eating disorders for more than 30 years. I started Eating Recovery Center in October 2008,” says Dr. Weiner, founding partner and CEO. “We are a mission-driven, for-profit company. Our mission is to provide the very best care to patients, families and providers of care in the treatment of and recovery from eating disorders and related conditions. We don’t compromise on the clinical side, and the business thrives as a result. We’ve brought the best minds in the eating disorder field together with sophisticated business people.”

Caring Approach

ercinfobox copy2 copyFounded by the world’s experts in eating disorder treatment, Eating Recovery Center leads the industry with its dedication to clinical experience and thought leadership, professional and consumer education, family involvement and after care support, and research and innovation. Eating Recovery Center is a licensed, Joint Commission-accredited behavioral hospital and has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval by meeting or exceeding The Joint Commission’s performance standards in areas such as quality, value and optimal outcomes of services.

To offer healing and lasting recovery to individuals with eating disorders and their families, Eating Recovery Center delivers a full continuum of care. ERC provides expert behavioral health and medical treatment in an environment that combines compassion, competence, collaboration and integrity.

By utilizing a unique, medical and psychiatric, evidence-based and cohesive treatment model approach, Eating Recovery Center helps patients achieve lasting recovery. ERC delivers a full spectrum of recovery services through multidisciplinary care teams that understand the challenges of eating disorders recovery. Each treatment team consists of a psychiatrist, individual therapist, family therapist, dietitian, nurse, case manager, alumni coordinator and other patient support staff. A full-time internal medicine physician is also available to all patients.

“What differentiates ERC is our fully vertically integrated health care system,” Dr. Weiner says. “That fully vertically integrated continuum is a difference maker because it is provides the best care for patients. We’re also in-network with all major insurance companies, which helps improve access to care as well.”

Over time, the organization has expanded its footprint in order to increase patient access to care. Today, Eating Recovery Center offers eating disorder treatment programs across the country. Eating Recovery Center of California offers services in Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area. In Texas, Eating Recovery Center has centers in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, The Woodlands and Austin. Eating Recovery Center of Washington operates in Bellevue. Eating Recovery Center of Ohio offers services in Cincinnati. In six Chicago locations, ERC Insight offers comprehensive eating disorder treatment, in addition to evidenced-based treatment mood and anxiety disorders treatment.

“Our clinical experience with eating disorders helps us to provide the best possible care, and an uncompromising commitment to quality,” Dr. Weiner explains. “We are the consummate niche company. We grew our footprint in Denver by adding leased facilities, and in 2011 we began acquiring and partnering with treatment centers around the country. In 2014 we started a de novo strategy to find the best people within a region and build a program around them. So we’ve grown through organic, acquisition and de novo approaches. Growth is built into our DNA.”

Expanding Vision

Eating Recovery Center understands that its continued success relies on talent - highly competent staff, trained by its renowned clinical leadership team. To support that need, ERC has created infrastructure and platforms to deliver consistent, best-in-class care to all patients across the country.

“Our ERC University provides online training for staff on our treatment and models of care,” Dr. Weiner says. “We use mobile technology through Recovery Record to monitor patients’ food intake and treatment, and to collaborate with outpatient treatment teams. We mine research through our database, which houses the largest collection of eating disorder research titles in the world. In everything we do, our goal is to raise the bar for the care of people with serious eating disorders.”

Eating Recovery Center knows it must lead the way to raise the bar for the industry. ERC is on the cutting edge of what is happening in eating disorders research and treatment, including staying on top of changing healthcare regulations.

“The Affordable Care Act has been a good thing for people with eating disorders, especially around expanded coverage and accessibility,” Dr. Weiner says.

In the years ahead, Eating Recovery Center will continue to grow its footprint. Many areas within the U.S. still have limited access to the top-quality eating disorder services. ERC believes it can continue to expand through its three-pronged approach of organic, acquisitive and de novo growth. Dr. Weiner believes that everyone who is a part of the organization is committed to the well being of patients and families, and feels the combined strengths of his team will push ERC to new heights.

“In the past 10 years,” he says, “I’ve learned the incredible value of my commitment to surrounding myself with skilled people and fostering a culture focused on compassion, competence, collaboration, integrity and innovation. I look forward to seeing where that commitment takes us in the years ahead.” mt
