Being a leader means creating a path that others follow, which includes taking control and forging ahead in new directions even when the going gets tough. Midland Manufacturing Product Manager David Clugg says that’s exactly what his company has done time and again in the past 50 years, which cements its place as America’s leading manufacturer of valves and level measurement devices for railroad tank cars, marine barges and ISO containers.

For the past 25 years, as the world has moved toward a more sustainable way of life, Machinex Inc. has been in the forefront, designing machinery for material recycling facilities (MRF). The company was the first of its kind in Canada, and has since expanded its operations throughout the globe.

From its location in America’s heartland, Geater Machining & Manufacturing Co. (GMM) takes its responsibilities to the aerospace and defense, communication, transportation, energy, electronics and high-tech industries to heart. The Independence, Iowa-based company provides high-quality precision machining and sheet metal fabrication services, as well as many secondary operations, which enables GMM to be a single source supplier to its clients.

If you’ve ever been in an airplane, you’ve probably touched an Aircraft Interior Manufacturers (AIM) Aviation product. For more than 30 years, AIM Aviation— a division of AIM Group USA based in Renton, Wash. — has been manufacturing aircraft interior components for commercial and private airplanes. “AIM Aviation designs, tests, certifies and manufacturers everything but the seats,” President John Feutz says. However, even seats are being put on aircraft with some help from AIM.

With factories across the country closing their doors or relocating overseas, one question is asked more frequently: Is American manufacturing dead? Although times look bleak for some domestic manufacturers, one company provides an example of how manufacturing in America, when managed properly, can thrive.

Although he has been the president of ergonomic backpack vacuum manufacturer ProTeam Inc. for five years, Matt Wood never forgets the hard work it took for him to reach the position, or those that have helped him along the way.

As part of Elkay Manufacturing Co., Elkay Southern Manufacturing strives to uphold the strong values held by its parent company since its inception, Plant Manager Derek Pringle says. “We honor our commitments to customers, employees, suppliers and the community in which we live and work,” he says.
