It is said that a poor craftsman blames his tools, but if the craft is cooking and the tools are made by All-Clad Metalcrafters, it would be hard to lay the blame there. Vertically integrated manufacturers are becoming harder to find in the United States as many companies outsource to overseas fabricators to reduce costs. US Pole, however, handles all of its processes in-house out of Palmdale, Calif., and CEO and President Joe Straus is proud to be able to compete in an industry dominated by large public competitors, very few of which actually manufacture their outdoor product line.

When J. Erskine Love Jr. founded Printpack in 1956, he was the sole employee operating a used cellophane bag machine in the basement of a Georgia office building. When Dennis McGrath analyzed the operations at PhotoMedex in Philadelphia in July 2009, he quickly determined the company was not losing between $10 million and $12 million annually because of its line of skin health management and rejuvenation product offerings. Instead, McGrath targeted the marketing and sales departments to leverage its talents, which meant extensive training and reassigning of personnel and resources.

When there is a natural disaster, there are likely to be severe injuries. But what can be done when the disaster occurs in a location that is not near a hospital? Mobile Medical International Corp. (MMIC) has a solution to this problem, President and CEO Rick Cochran says.

The St. Johnsbury, Vt.-based firm specializes in commercial and military/disaster products, including Mobile Surgery Units (MSUs), deployable shelters and other healthcare delivery facilities. Cochran founded MMIC in 1994 as a way to bring advanced care to underserved areas.
