Located in the tropical climate of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, on the north edge of the Caribbean Sea, Cancun attracts nearly 5 million tourists each year. Considering its prime location within Cancun, the new Puerto Cancun development is likely to attract a large share of the local tourism market, as well as Cancun’s residents.

After 30 years as the leading precast concrete manufacturer in Guatemala, Precon decided to expand its leadership skills into other realms. “We started 40 years ago in Guatemala,” says Juan Pablo Gonzalez, marketing manager for Precon. “We were dedicated in those first years to precast product basically for highway construction. In the early 2000s, we added some additions to make more products like block pavers.”

Scarred by civil war, Guatemala continues to tend to the wounds left by its bloody past while it builds toward a brighter, more peaceful future. Even though it plays a small part in the country’s recovery, Grupo Macro’s construction work still is an important part of helping Guatemala develop.

When construction work dried upin the aftermath of the worldwide economic downturn at the end of 2008, many contractors began submitting bids for any type of job available with the hopes that they could learn a new trade on the fly. Eventually, owners got wise and began weeding out the inexperienced firms with low bids that were too good to be true.

At every level and in every sector, contractors and subcontractors have been challenged on a daily basis by the harsh economic realities. Although national facts and figures give an accurate picture of the recession, they don’t take into account the individual stories that make up those aggregate numbers.
