Four Seasons Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing

Even though the company already is known as one of the best heating and air conditioning contractors in the Chicago area, Four Seasons Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing owner and President Dave Musial says that’s no reason for the company to rest on its laurels. Recognizing the growing importance of energy efficiency in the home improvement market, Four Seasons has spent the last few years bolstering its core business with additional services aimed at providing a one-stop shop for homeowners looking to save money on their energy bills.

“We’ve branched out into some other areas of energy efficiency – everything from blowing in insulation to windows, doors and siding,” Musial says. “What we’ve done is be able to offer consumers a whole-home solution to energy savings to take advantage of any energy tax credits and rebates and incentives from the utility companies.”

Through some careful planning and by seizing opportunities as they have arisen, Four Seasons has developed a strong presence in the energy efficiency side of the home improvement industry. With much of its competition slow to react to the shift, Musial says, Four Seasons stands to become the market leader in this area and hold that position for years to come.

Untapped Market

Musial says the inspiration for Four Seasons to make the move into energy efficiency services began in 2004. Many customers who had their furnace or air conditioning serviced by the company expected to see a greater impact on their energy bills, but this was because they didn’t factor in things like old windows or doors, or insufficient insulation.

“You can have the best furnace or air conditioning, but if your windows are leaking, you’re just going to be conditioning the outdoors, and most people don’t realize that,” Musial says.

Even if homeowners understand the need for energy-efficient windows, doors and insulation, most heating and air conditioning contractors don’t provide that type of service, leaving homeowners to search around for themselves.

“What’s happening is that there’s just nobody doing everything,” Musial says. “They’re only offering a small piece of the pie. You spend a lot of time getting multiple opinions and hoping that the recipe they put together is going to be the right one.”

Noticing that gap in the market, Musial says Four Seasons got to work assembling a team of experienced installers and tradespeople. Because of the recession and the collapse of many contractors who specialized in that kind of work, Four Seasons didn’t have to look very far for people. “What we’ve been able to do is take advantage of the pool of qualified people who are out there in the industry,” Musial says.

Because the company has such a wealth of experience, Four Seasons can bring a team of BPI-certified professionals to a customer’s home, Musial says.

“We don’t just send out one guy,” Musial says. “I send out a team of professionals.”

Greater Opportunities

Because the housing market has been in the grips of a severe downturn in the last few years, more and more people are staying put in their current homes and looking at their options to improve those homes. That’s why Musial says Four Seasons believes it needs to educate homeowners about their energy efficiency options as it serves their needs.

Even though Four Seasons has experienced success by integrating energy efficiency services into its core business, Musial says many of its competitors have been slow to react or outright dismissive of the shift, preferring to remain focused on heating and air conditioning. Although that means Four Seasons practically is the only contractor in the area offering these integrated services, it also means many customers are unaware that these services all can be performed by the same contractor. “It really comes down to educating the consumer,” Musial says.

Another area the company is watching closely is federal regulation. Musial says that as the government had imposed new energy efficiency mandates on furnaces, homeowners would likely see the price of new units go up significantly.

Even with that potential obstacle standing in the way, however, Musial says Four Seasons expects to continue finding success through adding new and valuable services.
