Understanding your customer because you are your customer has helped Northern Tool and Equipment grow from a small shop with a catalog to an online retail giant with more than 75 retail locations in 14 states. “A lot of us who were here at the beginning were our customer,” President Chuck Albrecht points out. Like founder, chairman and owner Don Kotula, Albrecht says he came from a farm and blue-collar background and had relatives and friends who made things in garages with power tools.
When an individual has incredible ideas, success might be just around the corner; however, if he complements his talents by joining forces with another visionary, then the growth potential can be astronomical. This is the case of CYJ Builders, a Peruvian company founded on the initiative of its leaders, CEO Jaime Rodríguez Larraín Gonzáles del Riego, and partner and General Manager Carlos Palacios. When the Tropicana Hotel opened on the Las Vegas strip on April 4, 1957, it wasn’t located at the grand intersection of massive theme-park-style hotels that it is now. No MGM Grand, New York New York or Excalibur hotels were at that intersection. Las Vegas was still the home of casinos, supper clubs and nightclub performers, not roller coasters.
KCI Construction Co. is drawing on its years of experience as a design/build general contractor for a number of major public sector jobs in its home market. It took 12 years of sitting behind a desk for Chris Armstrong to realize he was not really interested in a desk job. “When I decided to go into construction rather than design, I was influenced by a couple guys out there in construction,” recalls Armstrong, managing director of Shelbury Construction Inc. on the island of Barbados.

Rodney Frias, COO of S&F Concrete Contractors Inc., is passionate about the family’s concrete business. “Golf is my second passion,” he concedes. “Golfing is a great way to network in this business.” Frias is a frequent player at fundraising golf tournaments for many organizations, such as hospitals and universities.
